CREATOR'S MANIFESTO

by Bob Gonzalez

i am a creator. i create.
i am not unique because i create, for all beings create.
i am unique in what i create.
i create who i am.

i employ various arts, media, skills and symbols.
i am not defined by them nor by how i employ them
to create things that reflect my experience of life.
creation does not define or confine me.
creation refines me.

the work i create emerges from my play
with ideas, media, skills and emotions.

my work is the result of my play.
i play by twisting, turning, juggling, flipping, and scrambling
a collection of objects that fascinate me
until they fall into a pattern
that surprises and pleases me.
then i freeze that pattern and run to share it
with as many people as possible.
some are delighted; some are not.
when i have finished sharing with my circle of friends,
i return to my playground.

my play is the result of my work.
sometimes the activity of play,
the twisting and turning and scrambling,
creates a mess that does not surprise or delight me
but only disturbs, repels and depresses me.
then i want to run away or throw away the mess.
but if i stick with the mess,
work through the mess,
salvage the mess,
transform the mess,
probe the mess for its waiting beauty,
i not only finish a new creation
but i gain strength and skill
to play that much harder and better.
i create as a means of engaging myself with the essence of life.
life creates.
life creates itself.
life creates life.
life has no other purpose than to perpetuate itself,
to endlessly continue creating itself out of itself.
when i create, i commune with the essence of life.
i perpetuate myself in patterns of acts, sounds, symbols, shapes, lines, colors, textures and letters.
as long as these patterns maintain the shape in which i froze them, they perpetuate me and serve as seeds to inspire others to perpetuate themselves.

my creating is pure when i do it for its own sake.
if i think of creating for any other reason than for itself
--- for money or recognition ---
then the creative spirit leaves me barren, dry, empty.
the power of creation only flows through my unconditional love
for the process of creating and the emerging creation.

every creation is new.
the skill and the media may not be new.
the forms may not be new.
even the ideas, symbols and subjects may not be new.
but the way all of these are combined is new.
the magic is in the mix.

i am always creating.
sometimes others cannot tell because i have nothing to show.
but i am always working to bring a work of beauty into being.

i feel most alive when creating,
especially when playing with new skills, media or ideas.
my simple desire in creating anything is to surprise myself.

my creative projects are some of my best lovers.
they have entered my life bringing wonder and joy.
i have danced passionately with them until exhausted.
then i have embraced other partners for a time.
but my lovers always wait patiently for my return.
when i find them again, the dance is even sweeter.
